If you have not tested node addition prior to going live, we recommend that you stop all instances in the cluster while you are adding the node. Configure the switches, routers, and any other network devices for the new server. Ensure that switches are configured for each network used by the new server, for example, the external network, interconnect network, and storage network. If necessary, add the public network IP and VIP addresses of the new server to DNS; otherwise, add the new server to the /etc/hosts files for all existing nodes in the cluster.

Authentication schemes defined for the application Rather than apply a preconfigured scheme, you can instead use a custom authentication scheme, which gives you complete control over how your authentication scheme works. Typically, you might write a routine that authenticates a username and password against details that have been stored in a table. This chapter covers all the preconfigured authentication methods, except the LDAP directory and SSO authentication schemes (which are detailed in 13), as well as creating custom authentication schemes.

Install the operating system following the same procedure used for the original servers. If possible, use the same version of the operating system that was installed on the original servers. Create the dba group on the new node with the same group ID as allocated on the existing nodes. Also create an oracle user on the new node with the same user ID as assigned on the existing nodes. You can use the id utility to check the values on existing nodes.

Create a profile for the oracle user. For example, if you are using the bash shell, copy a . bashprof ile file from the home directory of the oracle user on another node. Edit the . bashprof ile file and modify any instance specific values, for example, the ORACLESID. As the node will be added using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI), you will need to configure ssh for the Oracle user on the new server, to enable files to be copied across the network and shell scripts to be executed remotely from the installation node. Verify that the Oracle user can run ssh and scp silently among all existing nodes on the cluster and the new node in both directions. If you are not using DNS, add the IP addresses of all other nodes in the cluster to /etc/hosts, including the public and private network addresses and the VIP address. Check that you can communicate all existing nodes in the cluster using the ping utifity. Remember to check both the external network and the interconnect network.
