Finally, the serialize element specifies the serializer component that transforms the SAX events into a stream of characters or binary digits for the final consumption of the output device. Okay, so when this action is used now, the resultant output isn t particularly printer friendly, but that has nothing to do with the Action class; it simply gathers the data required and then passes off responsibility to the view. StoryDetailSetupAction gathers all the data that you need for your printer-friendly view, since all you are really doing is creating a different view of the same action within the web site, that is, viewing a story. An image map is a context-sensitive image that can be clicked to produce different responses, depending on the point selected. There are two kinds of image maps. The more recent and preferred kind is the client-side image map, where the map is defined entirely in HTML and the client does all the work of selecting a URL and passing it to the server as a new request. The older kind is the server-side image map. Here, the client is presented with an image and sends the server a pair of coordinates when the user clicks the image. The server then determines which URL corresponds to those coordinates and redirects the client to it. There are disadvantages of using a server-side image map. It requires extra functionality in the server, causes the server to do extra processing when the client uses it, and denies the client the ability to render the available URLs as a list without explicitly requesting it. The only advantage to server-side image maps is that they obscure the range of possible results, useful for a spot-the-ball competition but not much else. However, if really necessary, server-side image maps aren t hard to use.
