For nodes A, J to communicate there are three disjoint routes to consider. The DSR protocol chooses one route (one of the shortest ones), namely A B C J to use for both ACK and DATA segments, as shown in Figure 10.9(a). COPAS, on the other hand, chooses two disjoint routes, namely A B C J and A F G H I J for DATA and ACK segments, respectively. Note that route A D E J is dropped from consideration as its congestion metric (8 + 9) is higher than the alternatives. Consequently, using separate paths for ACK and DATA segments helps alleviate spatial contention, because competition for transmission is avoided over the same path. Because congestion may be transient, COPAS keep track of it by piggybacking congestion information on packets along the forward and reverse paths.
